Origin

Swedish has been around for about 1000 years. Before that time, the same language was spoken throughout Scandinavia. Swedish is, just like Dutch, a Germanic language. This is the reason that we often recognize words or sounds in Swedish. Yet the Dutch and Sweden cannot understand each other. This is due to the development that both languages have gone through separately, but also because they are both descended from a different Germanic branch. Swedish comes from North Germanic, while Dutch comes from West Germanic.
