Ginseng and ginger - Different or the same?
OriginThe name ginseng comes from the Chinese word Ren Shen. There are different species of this plant, including American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium) and Chinese or Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng). However, what is popularly called Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) has nothing to do with these Panax species. Ginseng is mainly found in the east of Asia and the north of the United States.
AppearanceGinseng is a perennial plant of approximately 50 centimeters high. The compound leaves consist of five separate leaves and the fruits are scarlet red. The blood screens have around 25 flowers that are white to green in color. The roots of the ginseng are best known. These become browner in color as they age and become drier.
CharacteristicsThe dried ginseng root can often be found in herbal medicine. The use of ginseng in medicine is certainly not new. After all, red ginseng was first produced in the Goryeo dynasty around 1080 with the intention of being used as a natural medicine. Ginseng is nowadays mainly found in phytotherapy because of the following properties:
- Promotes concentration
- Reduces recovery time after physical and mental efforts
- Gives more sex
- Remedies impotence
- Stimulates the heart
- Improves blood circulation
- Lowers blood pressure
- Reduces bad cholesterol
- Has a beneficial effect on diabetes mellitus
- Strengthens the immune system and therefore prevents colds and flu
- Prevents cancer and speeds up its healing process
- Supports the nerves
- Prevents depression
However, Ginseng is not recommended for kidney diseases and for the use of certain medicines. Ginseng can also cause bleeding.
UseGinseng is primarily used as a dietary supplement (Herbalife, Biover, Tai Ginseng) or in cosmetics (soap, cream, shampoo). Ginseng coffee and ginseng tea have also become popular in recent years.
OriginGinger has its origins in Asian countries such as India, Japan, Jamaica and China, but also in African areas such as Nigeria and West Africa. According to tradition, it was first brought from China to Europe by Marco Polo. Ginger is extracted from the rootstock of the ginger plant or Zingiber officinale.
AppearanceGinger is a light yellow root with whimsical shapes and round fingers that has strong similarities with the galanga root.
CharacteristicsThe treatment of digestive problems (flatulence, nausea) and soothing the stomach are among the most important properties for which ginger is known. However, ginger has many other positive health effects:
- Prevents motion sickness and seasickness
- Reduces dizziness
- Relieves painful arthritis
- Neutralizes acids in the body
- Reduces muscle pain
- Improves blood flow
- Improves libido
UseGinger is used for both culinary and medicinal purposes. It is a widely used ingredient in Asian cuisine, especially those from Indonesia and Thailand. The most popular uses are ginger tea, ginger cookies, ginger beer, candied ginger and ginger syrup, but the spicy lemon-like taste of ginger can also be mixed in wok and rice dishes, such as nasi goreng and Babi Ketjap, or in cold dishes such as Asian beef carpaccio and Asian steak tartare.
In combination with almond oil, ginger oil can be used to massage sore muscles and treat areas with arthritis.
